Ostens is the brainchild of Christopher Yu and Laurent Delafon – two industry veterans who have seen the fragrance creation to distribution process so closely that they understand every single detail and challenges involved in the success of a perfume. Having worked within the fragrance industry for over 20 years alongside some of the most creative minds and noses including Francis Kurkdjian, Olivier Polge, and Yves Coueslant to Lyn Harris, Sophie Labbe, and Dominique Ropion, it was maybe only a matter of time before Chris and Laurent eventually poured their combined knowledge and passion into their own creation – OSTENS.
The brand worked with five of the world’s most celebrated noses and released a debut collection of six carefully crafted Eau de Parfums that they paired with each ingredient ‘inspiration’ – captured within an oil – allowing consumers to experience the raw material just as they did in Grasse.
Ostens has been creating a lot of buzz since its launch and for all good reasons. The concept of bringing the fragrance with its ingredient in an oil form is unique and definitely earns extra points. It is the joy of experiencing the raw material that in my opinion makes them stand out. The minimal presentation looks so chic and sophisticated. I heard Ostens Boutique is located on one of the secret streets of London – So Intriguing!!
Out of the six creations, these four stood out to my nose –
Patchouli Heart No. I – One of the most easy-to-wear Patchouli fragrances, I have ever smelt! This is addictively good patchouli without its earthiness. So subtle and warm, Patchouli Heart No. I definitely makes an impression. A fragrance that you will not forget.
Cashmeran Velvet – Warm, Elegant, Sensual, and so comforting – I find Cashmeran Velvet is the sexiest fragrance from the collection. It has sandalwood as one of the ingredients and no wonder why it gives me cozy vibes like wearing a cashmere jumper. This is a molecule fragrance and has a vibe similar to Le Labo’s Santal 33 but slightly cheaper than Santal 33 considering Ostens fragrances come with Préparation oil too. Cashmeran Velvet is such a beautiful creamy, woody fragrance and is on my to-buy list next.
Jasmine Absolute – What a true representation of bright, luminous jasmine in full bloom that manages to smell addictive and gorgeous! Jasmine with a multitude of facets. This fragrance smells like jasmine flowers in full bloom with a woody base. I have a Jasmine in my garden and I sit next to that a few times a day. I feel Jasmine Absolute brings me that happiness that I get sitting next to my Jasmine climber. Jasmine Absolute is on my wishlist!
Rose Oil Isparta – A fresh, dewy rose with citrusy and spicy elements and ripe, jammy blackcurrant heart and woodsy base. A rose in its purest form supported by pink pepper to give an interesting twist – A masterpiece from Perfumer Dominic Ropion! This is an intense interpretation of the rose and is so enveloping. Bold & Voluptuous, this rose fragrance has a middle eastern vibe and is oh so addictive!
Both Jasmine Absolute and Rose Oil Isparta project quite heavily.
Rose, Jasmine and Sandalwood are used heavily from where I have my roots. These ingredients are used in perfumery, weddings, festive decor, and in different rituals in my culture. I have smelt these throughout my life and that is why I feel so connected to such perfumes. Other than the above four, the discovery set also comes with Cedarwood Heart and Patchouli Heart No. II.
Have you tried Ostens Impression fragrances yet? If not, I highly recommend trying out the discovery collection which costs just £30 and comes with 6 x 2ml sprays. For a limited time, if you buy the Discovery Collection and you will receive £30 towards a full-size bottle of your favourite fragrance (valid until 30 June 2021).
Until next time, Ashh xo
